Dunkirk 60th Anniversary Commemorative March - May 2000

This march to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Dunkirk evacuation retraced the steps of troops from Merville back to Dunkirk. The march involved some 23 miles on the first day followed by fortunately shorter distances over the next 2 days to get the group to Dunkirk; a total of 45 miles. Whilst the nights were spent under shelter (Church Hall, School & seafront bar) the days were spent marching on foot for 8 to 10 hours.

The plan had been for us to be met by a French Destroyer at Dunkirk and be ferried back to Dover. However, the weather deteriorated and the ships captain decided it was too risky to come in alongside the dock. The group was finally rescued by one of the ferry companies & shipped back to Dover. It was certainly entertaining for the other passengers as ~40 fully equipped, tired and grubby British WW2 re-enactors boarded the ferry.
